Step One

In all honesty, that protest went far better than anything I could have hoped for. I am really proud of the entire Paton College for showing up and voicing our concerns. An even more positive sign- MUN put out a press release already concerning the protest, and although it provided no new material and continues to spin the issue, it definitely sends a sign that this fight is far from over.

The rally was a great start but we clearly can't just leave it at that. While it went really well, if its not followed by more, it would just be a little blip on the radar. I'm not sure what the fallout of this could be, but what if people were to sit outside Dr. Meisen's office? They could ask him questions whenever he enters or leaves. It could be constantly just a few people or it could be a mass of people...like I said, I'm not overly sure how this would work but something else needs to get on the go soon.

I agree we cant just leave it at the protest. If admin gets the idea that were just going to lay down and let them go ahead then everything up until now has been a waste. Even something as simple as continuing with letters emails etc. Also if you know anyone applying for next year then let them know. Maybe if MUN sees that no one thinks this is effective they will reconsider.

I also agree the protest was realy good but i think we should do it more often and peobley protest on the confideration building to see if the primear will do anthing to help

You made a point with the rally of support. The Student Affairs and Services office on the 5th floor even locked it's doors. They know you mean business. All the best of luck to you all and don't give up.

"on" the Confederation Building, eh? I'll scale it if you will.

Hit 'em where it hurts. The next event that Housing and MUN offer house points for residence to attend a Men's Basketball game or other such event: Boycott.

Granted, it could backfire since the action could be seen as a reason to get rid of seniors because they pressure frosh.

I think more Frosh need to be brought forward to talk about how having a house full of seniors impacted their residence experience.

What about the Day of Action on Feb 7? They are marching up to Confederation Building to pressure them to keep our tution so low, why not throw in some signs about seniors in rez and see what thry have to say about that. It would also get more people out there for the Day of Action.

I am starting to think that there isn't much else going to happen, Its been pretty quiet since the last time we had protest. I think we need to have another demonstration of some sorts very soon......

I lived in Paton College from 88 to 93, and it appears that nothing has changed - The University was just as intent on breaking down the house system then as they are now. They succeeded to the degree they did by taking an incrementalist approach, counting on the turn-over in students and influx of frosh to acclimatize everyone to "the new normal". Even if you succeed in staving off a major change now, rest assured they'll look to erode whatever concessions you win NEXT term (or over the Summer - they're STILL pulling that trick I see!)

From a quick perusal of the situation it appears you face many of the same issues - Hostile student paper, indifferent local media, and an administration profoundly uninterested in two-way dialogue.

On the other hand, you appear more organized than we were, and have more access to resources on activism and organization. Getting your message out is crucial, but so is self-reliance - if you beleive in something, do it for yourself - don't look to the administration or other outside body to help you. Best of luck!
